Guess what happened to me yesterday...

Yesterday, I went to Target after work to get an envelope to mail friend a copy of our CD, Heartburn. So, I drive on over to Target. I like to park near the back. I don't want to hit anyone with my huge SUV. And I don't want anyone to hit me. I get out of the truck and begin walking toward the entrance of Target. I always enter by the clothing/music/greeting card sections. I don't like entering on the grocery side. As I am approaching the entry, I notice a car driving rather slowly on the wrong side of the street. You're supposed to drive on the right hand side of the road. They were on the left. A white woman was driving the car. I thought it strange that she was driving so slow. And then I hear voices. The woman in the car is talking to or yelling at a black man who is walking along side the car. The man is on the sidewalk. The woman is driving on the wrong side of the road in the car. Actually, the woman was driving along side the man. The man was NOT walking along side the car. The man and woman are arguing back and forth. The woman is using all kinds of explicatives trying to get the man to get back in the car.

Now, mind you, Fishers is not the most racially diverse town in Indiana. As far a African Americans are concerned, it is me and this man walking on the sidewalk. I try my best to NOT be nosy, but can't help be drawn to this drama unfolding right before my eyes. I keep my distance and walk AWAY from the moving vehicle. But it is at that point that God speaks to me. He tells me that I need to get involved. And I tell God, "HECK NO!" I am keeping my distance. I don't want anything to do with whatever this couple is going through. Domestic violence is for the BIRDS!

So, I keep walking. And God tells me that there is a baby in the car. To confirm the Spirit, I take a look as I am walking by (now behind the car). And sure enough, in the back seat of the car is a baby seat. The baby is covered by a blanket. And babies should be covered by blankets when they are outside. You don't want them exposed to these elements. They could be toxic for the baby. I digress, though. I still keep walking. I don't want anything to do with anything. As I pass the car on the verge of entering the first set of double doors, I think to call 911. This seems like a job for the police. But, I resist again. I don't want to get involved. Always keeping my eyes open on what's going on, I notice the car (and man) move pass the entry way.

Just as I enter the store, my eyes meet the eyes of the man. Careful not to make direct eye contact, I try to avoid his glare. I can't do it quick enough though. My eyes meet his and we instantly acknowledge the awkwardness of this situation.

Yet and still, I keep going. By now, I noticed that the man has actually turned around. You know, a car just can't turn around anywhere. And the woman in the car did not feel comfortable driving on the wrong side of the road BACKWARDS. So, now, I think, I need to make a move. I duck into the aisle. You know when you walk into Target, there's that first section that has little sale items. On the Starbucks side, they have $1 items. On the greeting card side, they have discounted dry goods. I try to become unnoticed, but am not successful. Brother Man walks into Target and comes straight toward me. I guess he felt that I was the only person in Fishers he could identify with. So, I step up to the plate. This was OBVIOUSLY meant to be. I put on my big boy shoes and do what I have to do.

He says to me, "Can you believe that man? She trippin'! Trying to front on me in front of all these people."

And I just stand there and give my 'I'm pretending like I really carry what you are talking about look'. I say, "Mmmmhh..."

He syas, "Man, she all callin' me this and that. (You fill in the blanks.) You can't be callin' me that in front of all these white folks."

And I say, "Riigghhtt... Mmmmhhh..."

"I'm not even from here. I'm from Louisiana," he says.

And then I turn the tables on him. "Is that your baby in that car?"

He answers, "Yeah, it is. But she actin' a fool."

Staying on track, I'm bring him back. "So what are you gonna do?"

He replies, "Man, I don't know. She trippin'! Following me around. Calling me names..."

And I keep the focus on the important figure in this situation, the baby. "Yes. So, if that's your baby, what are you going to do?"

He replies, "Man, I don't even know."

And then I impart some knowledge. "I ask you that because I see too many of our young people growing up without a father in their life. There are too many of us not raising our kids."

And he says, "You right man. You right."And then I ask again, "So what are you gonna do?"

In response, "I guess I'll get back in the car. Thanks man. Hopefully I'll see you around."

With that being said, the young man walks back outside. I believe he got back in the car.

What an experience!?!?

Have you ever doubted your own effectiveness? If you've read any of my previous entries, you know that that's been my struggle during my tenure in Indianapolis. I left Michigan where I was somewhat of a "somebody." Don't get me wrong. I wasn't a celebrity, but I did have a fairly decent reputation for being a stellar person. (Does that make me shallow for saying that?) I'm over that, though. That was then, this is now. I'm a new person with new purpose.

I guess, the next question is, "What is that purpose?" To be honest, at this very moment, I cannot accurately and definitely articulate my purpose. I have an advanced degree in music. I serve as the Minister of Music at my church. Is my purpose in life to be a choir director? I have a degree in business and work in the financial industry. Is my purpose in life to be a financial consultant or a stock broker? I have a knack for putting functions and affairs together on a large and small scale. Is my purpose in life to be an event coordinator? I love to write and design. Does destiny say I'm supposed to work for a newspaper? Or, am I supposed to use all of these gifts and talents in one single job for the sake of ministry? I don't know. I just don't know.

"You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it useful again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world-like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don't hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." (Matthew 5:13 NLT)

With my wedding coming up and my life about to take another drastic turn, I need to get some direction. I need to hear from God! And then I laugh. We often say that we need and want to hear from God, but rarely do we listen for His voice. I pray. I tell God about my problems. I even plead with Him for solutions to my every day situations. Do I listen for His response? I can't say that I always do. That's when God has to find ways to get our attention.

A few weekends ago, I attended a concert in Kokomo, Indiana. It's not too far from Indianapolis. It's not too close either. A young friend of mine was the host. Plus, I just wanted to hear some good singing. Good gospel music is what I enjoy. I don't get enough chances to do activities like that. So, I decided I would go. Many of the local groups in "The Apostolic Circle" were there. And they sang some of the same songs familiar to "The A Circle." Sadly that night, it wasn't the music that stuck with me. It was the move of God that came in after all the groups had sung their songs and left. The presence of God was so thick in that place.

And then God spoke to me (through another sister). It was told to me that my influence is far greater than I see. I knew it had to be from God. Only God had known that I had been struggling with the ho-hum, day-to-day routine of Indianapolis. I felt like I wasn't having an impact on anything or anyone. I wasn't heartbroken over the fact that I didn't see the difference I was making. I was just disappointed. If I never had any affect on anyone before, I guess I wouldn't be bothered. But since I was used to being a mover and a shaker, I began to miss it all.

That night, though, confirmation was given. It didn't matter what I thought about it all. God was in the middle of using me to do something great. Just because my natural eyes could not see the benefit of my existence did not mean that my presence wasn't important. It was told to me that people are watching me. And people are taking notice of what I am doing. Those words alone gave me a lift that I had not felt in a long time.

I've said all that to make this point. It's not about being the most popular. It's not about having the most friends. It's about your influence or your affect on people. Even if you never get a chance to be on stage, you still perform daily on the stage of life. People are watching you. People notice when you do good. And people really notice when you do bad. Be careful of the company you keep. And always stay on your toes. The life you lead is the best witness you have.

Dear Faith Friends,

It is with great pleasure that I announce the 5th annual Greater Grace Temple Apostolic Church Family and Friends Day Celebration. Our theme this year is, “Christ as the Head of the Family” from Colossians 1:15-20. Our Family and Friends Day Celebration will take place Sunday, March 4, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Greater Grace Temple in Anderson, Indiana. The program will include uplifting testimonies, anointed singing and inspired preaching.

Please make plans now to attend. Go the extra mile and invite your own family and friends to be a part of this great celebration. This will be an awesome opportunity for them and a wonderful fellowship for us all. Come early for a good seat. Then enjoy our Family and Friends Day service, followed by our annual Family and Friends Day Fellowship Dinner. Highlights of the service will include musical selections from an extremely gifted and talented group, The Crumble Sisters, and resident recording choir, the Greater Grace Temple Anointed Mass Choir (aka G-TAC). The service will also feature the anointed preaching ministry of our very special guest, Evangelist Esther V. Smith, world-renowned recording artist, spiritual counselor and preacher.

With the record of success achieved at our previous Family and Friends Day Celebrations, I am overwhelmed with excitement and anticipation of God’s miraculous power and anointing at this year’s service. Members of Grace are setting the atmosphere right now for an outpouring of God’s spirit on all those in attendance. Please do not miss this chance for all of us to be together and experience an awesome move of God.
